MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers and the University of Perpetual Help Altas came off with contrasting victories on Monday to sweep their elimination round assignments in the 20th Fr. Martin Summer Cup.
Kim Lo scored a lay-up in the final second to power the Growling Tigers to a 71-69 triumph over the Lyceum Philippines University-A Pirates to complete a seven-game sweep of Group B.
Lo finished the game with 15 points, while big man Kareem Abdul scored 13 markers.
Meanwhile, GJ Ylagan fired 18 points for the Altas in their 101-74 demolition of the Centro Escolar University-Malolos Scorpions to top Group A with their ninth consecutive victory.
Anton Tamayo and Nigerian Akhuetie Bright contributed 14 and 13 points for the Altas, who took charge right in the opening frame.
Bright had 11 points in the first 10 minutes as the Altas pulled away, 28-11. They then held the Scorpions to just 14 points in the second quarter, allowing them to take a 55-32 halftime lead.
UST and Perpetual Help have now formally entered the semi-final round of the competition.
Meanwhile, the Enderun College Titans drew double-digit baskets from Earl Maravilla, Willie Kamguia and Jordan Rios as they held off the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals, 82-74.
The Titans, led by Maravilla’s 25 points, improved their chances of earning the Group A semis berth with their fifth win in seven games. The pair of Kamguia and Rios fired 21 points each.
