MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – JuneMar Fajardo delivered another monster game for San Miguel Beer to help the Beermen escape with a come-from-behind 102-99 victory against the GlobalPort Batang Pier on Tuesday’s PBA Governors' Cup.

"The Krakken" scored 26 points and came two rebounds shy of breaking a 39-year-old record to help the Beermen overcome a 17-point deficit against the Batang Pier.

GlobalPort appeared headed to its second victory in the tournament after leading the way for most part of the game. But San Miguel unfastened an 11-0 run to claim the lead, 98-91, in the payoff period.

GlobalPort refused to back down and climbed back, 97-100, late in the fourth quarter. After Fajardo’s free throws, Alex Cabagnot scored a jumper to make it 99-102 with 10.2 ticks left.

The Batang Pier tried to send the game into overtime, but their offense collapsed after Terrence Romeo failed to pull off an attempt against the defense put up by Chris Lutz and Reggie Williams.

Aside from topscoring for the Beermen, Fajardo had 27 rebounds that came close to Macelino Simbulan’s rebounding record of 29 for 7-Up in 1975. The Krakken also had 4 shot blocks.

“I didn’t necessarily expect to play catch-up, but I expected a very close game,” said San Miguel Beer active consultant Todd Purves in the PBA website.

Import Williams added 23 points, while Arwind Santos tallied 18 for San Miguel, which now has a record of 3-1.

Dior Lowhorn scored 38 points for GlobalPort, but it didn’t matter as the Batang Pier fell to their fourth loss in five games.

“With Dior Lowhorn, I got a lot of respect for him. I’ve seen him with Saigon Heat, with Ginebra, and now I’ve seen him with GlobalPort, and he can really play. He was a handful for us tonight. The whole team was,” Purves said.
