Why Vetyeka doesn't deserve Donaire rematch

MANILA, Philippines – If sports analyst Joaquin Henson would have his way, South African Simpiwe Vetyeka won’t get a rematch with newly crowned WBA featherweight king Nonito Donaire Jr.

In his Philippine Star column, “The Dean’s Corner,” Henson said V12 would have been outmatched by the “Filipino Flash” if not for his dirty tactics.

“The South African was definitely not in Donaire’s class. His defense was porous, his footwork inconsequential,” said Henson. “What was evident was Vetyeka fought dirty, reminiscent of Sandy Saddler and Love Allotey who were disgraceful in their battles with Flash Elorde.”

Donaire suffered a nasty gash over the left eye after he figured in an “accidental clash of heads” with Vetyeka in the first round of their title fight over the weekend. Vetyeka was the defending champion in that bout and was apparently determined to keep his crown as he was seen butting the Filipino’s wound twice in the second round to Donaire’s agony.

But a more urgent Donaire decked the South African with a 2-3 combo in the fourth round and had Vetyeka in trouble again when he tagged V12 with another left hook.

The fight ended at the start of Round 5, when referee Luis Pabon deemed Donaire unfit to continue the fight due to injury. The judges eventually favored the Filipino Flash with a unanimous technical decision due to his knockdown against Vetyeka.

Donaire later announced that he wants to give the South African an immediate rematch, given the anticlimactic ending of their bout.

But Henson argued that Vetyeka doesn’t deserve another break.

“Under equal circumstances, Vetyeka would’ve been knocked out by Donaire. If Donaire could stagger Vetyeka and drop him despite a handicap with blood obstructing his vision, the Filipino Flash would’ve flattened him for sure if only the cut wasn’t inflicted. It would’ve been a mismatch, all things being equal, which is why Vetyeka doesn’t deserve a rematch,” said Henson.

“Besides, why give a rematch to a dirty fighter who showed no sportsmanship?”
