MANILA -- Powerade-Team Pilipinas was given a stern warning about FIBA-Asia’s anti-doping policy shortly before leaving for Medan, Indonesia for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship.

The warning was given by sports medicine specialist and the team’s medical committee chief for FIBA-Asia Dr. George Canlas, according to an article posted on PBA.ph.

“Whatever you’re taking, whatever you’re smoking, stop it,” he said.

Canlas reportedly laid down the anti-doping policy in the 25th FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship in Tianjin, China during a dinner with the RP squad and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios last Monday.

“They will be very strict in the FIBA-Asia,” said Canlas. “There will be random testing, probably from the preliminaries all the way to the finals.”

Team Pilipinas will be hurdling Southeast Asian teams in SEABA which is a qualifier for FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball set Aug. 6-16

“All medications should come from me or the team trainer,” said Canlas. He also advised the Nationals to be free of any performance-enhancing substance a month before FIBA-Asia.

“Even certain vitamins, wheat protein and cold tablets could give you false positives,” said Canlas. “So it’s best to stop whatever you’re taking four weeks before the FIBA Asia.”

There will be no dope testing in the SEABA, however, he said.
