LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Lakers pulled out a gritty 101-96 overtime victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals.

Kobe Bryant led the way for the Lakers with 29 points but Los Angeles were nowhere near as dominant as they were in a series-opening 100-75 whitewash of the Magic, who could have won the game in regulation on Sunday had Courtney Lee's alley-oop lay-in attempt at the buzzer not rimmed out.

"We just drove ourselves through the game," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. "I didn't think Kobe had a good game at all as far as his standards go.

"They double teamed him, they trapped him, they came on all his drives, and we didn't adjust to it."

Pau Gasol, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds, scored seven of the Lakers' 13 points in overtime to clinch the victory, while Lamar Odom hit eight of his nine shots to finish with 19 points.

Turnovers tell

The Magic were led in scoring by Rashard Lewis, who scored 34 points including six of 12 from three-point range. Hedo Turkoglu added 22 points and Orlando outscored the Lakers 30-15 from beyond the arc.

"The three-point shooters seemed to flourish tonight, even though looking at the stats sheet they shot 33 percent from the three-point line," said Jackson. "It still kept them in the ball game."

Orlando were hurt by 20 turnovers, 12 more than they had in Thursday's loss.

"I thought our guys fought hard, but we couldn't make enough plays," said Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. "And the 20 turnovers crushed us in the end."

Los Angeles held a five-point lead at halftime but were outscored 30-23 in the third period and trailed 65-63 going into the fourth frame.

Gasol had a lay-in with 33 seconds left in regulation to level the score at 88-88 before Bryant had a potential game-winning jump shot blocked by Turkoglu with less than a second remaining.

The best-of-seven series now shifts to Orlando for Game Three on Tuesday.
