Calderon wants Viloria after Mayol
MANILA -- World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon is setting his sights on reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) 108-pound king Brian Viloria should he hurdle Filipino challenger Rodel “Batang Mandaue” Mayol this weekend.
“Right now Viloria, being the number 1 name, could help me have a little more name because he has been to the Olympics, to the USA team,” the WBO champion from Puerto Rico said in an interview over dzSR’s Sports Chat with Dennis Principe.
Calderon said he has collided with Viloria in the amateur ranks. He added that it would be interesting to know how the Filipino champion has improved as a professional.
“There was this story that we fought three times, he beat me twice and I beat him once. That’s something that a lot of people would want to see… that fight, that rematch. [Let’s] see what happens now that he's a pro,” said the Puerto Rican.
However to make that match a reality, Calderon will have to hurdle Mayol on June 13 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
The 34-year-old Puerto Rican described Mayol as a good opponent for him. “He's a good opponent for me to fight. It's also a good opportunity for the Filipino people,” said Calderon.
The Calderon match will be Mayol’s third try for a world title. Prior to the June 13 fight, he has lost his attempts against WBC minimum weight champion Eagle Den Junlaphan and former IBF king Ulises Solis.
“My trainer saw one of his fights. He said he's a good fighter. He's tall, he moves good, he has power punches,” said Calderon when asked about Mayo’s fighting style.
Mayol totes a 25-3-0 record while Calderon remains undefeated in 32 fights. Dennis Gasgonia, abs-cbnNEWS.com
