Top Rank supports Donaire in drug testing
MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank Promotions is fully supporting super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire’s decision to submit himself to year-round random drug testing.
Donaire announced yesterday that he has agreed to year-round random drug testing, which will be administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).
In an interview with Boxing Scene, Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said he fully supports Donaire’s decision. [http://www.boxingscene.com/top-rank-backs-nonito-donaires-year-round-drug-testing--53894]
“I talked to (Donaire’s nutritionis) Victor Conte, and I told him we back this 100%. We are going to talk to our fighters and have them all enroll in this program,” Arum said.
Arum said Donaire’s decision to submit to VADA’s year-round drug testing “makes all the sense in the world.”
“You test them all year. Rather than it being a ‘gotcha’ program that simply catches cheats, the fighters are made aware of what to put and not put into their body. As part of this, we’ll educate the fighters,” he said.
In the past month, two high-profile bouts have been cancelled because of fighters testing positive for drug tests.
The rematch between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson, originally scheduled for May 19, was cancelled when Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone.
Another rematch, this time between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto, was also scrapped when Berto tested positive for the banned substance nandralone.
With the year-round testing by VADA, Arum said athletes will now learn about the “proper things to put in their body.”
“One of the problems that I see is that the fighters aren’t cheating, but inadvertently using the wrong supplements, with traces of steroids and testosterone,” he noted.
Donaire said that the drug testing program will begin a day after he defends his superbantamweight title against South African boxer Jeffrey Mathebula on July 7.
