MANILA - Francis Casey Alcantara of the Philippines and Liang-Chi Huang of Chinese Taipei spelled success with their recent doubles partnership at the 17th International Junior Tournament of Offenbach/Main 2009.

Alcantara and Huang, the top doubles seeds, prevailed over eighth seeds Peruvian Duilio Beretta and Ecuadorian Roberto Quiroz, 6-2, 4-6 [10-7], according to the International Tennis Federation website (ITFtennis.com).

The Grade 1 event for junior tennis players was held from June 9 to June 14 at Offenbach/Main, Germany. Its surface was clay.

Prior to the final, Alcantara and Huang breezed through the doubles draw as they won in straight sets until the semifinals.

They started their doubles run with a bye into the second round where they won over Germans Julian Lenz and Hendrik Bertrams, 6-1, 6-1.

In the quarterfinal, they beat the sixth-seeded pair of Brazilian Guilherme Clezar and Ecuadorian Emilio Gomez, 6-4, 6-3.

They overcame Mirza Basic of Bosnia/Herzegovina and Harry Fowler of the US, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinal. Basic and Fowler were the fourth seeds.

Meanwhile, in the event’s singles draw, Alcantara reached the second round.

Alcantara’s doubles success on the German clay made up for his first round singles loss and second round doubles loss in the French Open.

To date, the 17-year-old netter from Cagayan de Oro has won five doubles titles this year.

Aside from the German doubles title, Alcantara won the doubles crown last month with Chinese Taipei’s Cheng-Peng Hsieh in the 45th Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships.

Hsieh was Alcantara’s partner in the Australian Open, where they bagged the Junior Boys’ Doubles championship in January.

He then teamed up with Sweden’s Daniel Berta and won two doubles titles in March at the Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup in Malaysia and Mitsubishi-Lancer Juniors Championships in Manila.

Alcantara, currently with a combined ranking of 32 (as of June 8), is set to compete at the two remaining grand slams of the season, Wimbledon and the US Open.
