Bullettes to carry RP flag in Touch Rugby tilt
MANILA -- A troop of Filipino women will carry the Philippine flag when the country battles its foreign counterparts in the 6th Asian Club Touch Rugby Championships on June 20-21 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Nomads Bullettes Ladies team, who has reaped awards in various tournaments here and abroad, will head the field competing in the event with the support of Gatorade.
“I think there will be tremendous opportunity for the team to win. This is a game where size and height is not much of a factor. Each player will rely on speed and fitness,” said Nomads coach Rey Gigataras during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.
The tournament, organized by the Asian Touch Football Federation, attracts club teams from all over Asia.
Touch rugby is derived from rugby football in which players do not tackle in the traditional, highly physical way, but instead touch their opponents using their hands on any part of the body, clothing, or the ball.
Arabelle Jimenez, one of the members of the Bullettes, said touch rugby is one sport where Filipinos can excel.
“The sport is ideal for Filipinos because we have good hand-eye coordination,” she said.
Gigataras said the sport has been played in the Philippines for the past five years. Dennis Gasgonia, abs-cbnNEWS.com
