Mayweather ordered to testify in Pacquiao lawsuit: reports
MANILA, Philippines - It seems there will be no stopping Floyd Mayweather Jr's matchup with Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, at least in the courtroom.
A report on the ProBoxing Fans website said US Federal Magistrate Judge Robert Johnston denied an emergency motion filed by Mayweather to delay his testimony in the defamation suit filed by Pacquiao against him. Instead, the judge ordered the American boxer to give sworn testimony under oath, beginning tomorrow, June 17.
Pacquiao has sued Mayweather for defamation after the latter accused Pacquiao of taking performance-enhancing drugs.
Mayweather had earlier asked the court to delay his testimony because of his need to train for his upcoming bout against Victor Ortiz on September 17.
Meanwhile, a Los Angeles Times report said Mayweather does not plan to show up as requested for a deposition at a Las Vegas law office.
Pacquiao attorney Daniel Petrocelli said he received a letter from Mayweather attorney Mark Tratos saying the boxer would not appear at the deposition Friday because he planned to appeal the order for him to be there.
"Even if you appeal, it doesn't mean you don't show," Petrocelli said. "This kind of appeal would never be granted; this is about gathering routine discovery."
