MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee turned back sister team San Miguel Beer with a come-from-behind 97-90 win at the Araneta Coliseum in the PBA Governors' Cup on Tuesday to book a ticket to the semifinals and inch closer to a Grand Slam.

Justin Melton and Allein Maliksi stepped up big time for the Coffee Mixers, who trailed the Beermen for 3 quarters.

San Mig Coffee missed PJ Simon due to back spasms but Melton and Maliksi were up to the task. They unleashed a 12-2 run that turned a 6-point deficit into a 10-point lead, 93-83, in the fourth quarter.

The Coffee Mixers had a twice-to-beat bonus going into the quarterfinals, but were visibly weakened by their 95-94 loss to Rain or Shine on Monday.

The Beermen took notice and immediately erected a 27-14 lead over their sister team in the opening period. San Miguel Beer was still in control midway the fourth quarter when Melton and Maliksi began the incursion.

Marqus Blakely topscored for the Coffee Mixers with 25 points, but Melton and Mallari made the difference with their 16 and 9 points, respectively.

“I don’t even know how we handled fatigue in this game,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone in the PBA website. “It was a tough balancing act from last night (Monday). But we seemed to get energy in the fourth quarter.”

The loss bundled San Miguel Beer out of Governors’ Cup contention with a 5-5 win-loss record.

Henry Williams scored 21 points for the Beermen, which also got 21 from Arwind Santos. But this did not stop the Beermen from collapsing in the fourth quarter and missing the trip to the semifinal round.
