Ginebra escapes Rain or Shine in Game 2
MANILA - Barangay Ginebra posted a thrilling 103-98 win over Rain or Shine in Game 2 of the 2008-09 Motolite-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome Friday.
David Noel’s two huge plays helped the Gin Kings to level the best-of-seven semifinal series in their journey towards the PBA championship.
The Ginebra import poked the ball on Ty Tang for the go-ahead slam. This was followed by his three-pointer that seal the win for the Gin Kings.
Noel finished with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to support the 34-point explosion of Jayjay Helterbrand, who drew blanks in the final canto.
“I’m glad I was able to hit those timely shots and that’s the job of the import, to take over when needed,” said Noel, who was 10-of-17 from the field and had three steals in the game.
“Hats off to the coaching staff, to Jayjay and to the team. We’re lucky to pull this one out,” he added.
Helterbrand was unstoppable during the first three quarters, hitting almost every shot he hoisted but was blanked in the final 12 minutes before Noel took over.
Burger King levels series with San Miguel
In the second game, Burger King also leveled its own semifinal series as it hammered a 116-113 win over San Miguel Beer in Game 2.
Gary David hit four charities in the closing seconds that secured the win and helped the Whoppers to bounce back from an 87-102 defeat in series opener.
“I told the players if we can keep the game close, we’ll have the chance in the game,” said Burger King coach Yeng Guiao. “I think this win will give us more confidence in this series. It’s just one win but we like our chances now.”
Shawn Daniels led the Whoppers with 29 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals while Arwind Santos and David recovered from dismal Game 1 performances and contributed big to the victory.
Santos had 22 markers while David chipped in 12 but the most important was his four free throws that sealed the win for the team.
