MANILA - A member of the Philippine football youth team has tested positive for influenza A(H1N1) virus in Singapore, authorities confirmed.

Xinhua news agency reported that the Filipino teen’s laboratory results showed that he had the virus.  The report was also confirmed by Col. Cesar Binag, Chef de Mission of the RP team.

The Singaporean health ministry said the teen athlete developed flu symptoms Friday afternoon. A routine temperature taking revealed that he had fever. He was then admitted to the Communicable Disease Center.

Xinhua reported that the athlete is now in stable condition.

The football player’s close contacts, including his 17 teammates, two coaches, and one team doctor, have been brought to a beach resort for quarantine.

The 14-year-old footballer arrived in Singapore with his team on Thursday for the Asian Youth Games slated from June 29 to July 7.

The Singaporean health ministry said the Asian Youth Games will proceed as scheduled. Only the matches of the Philippine football team will be postponed. With Agence France-Presse
