2nd Pinoy athlete in Singapore shows flu-like symptoms
MANILA - Another Filipino football player is under observation by Singaporean health authorities after he exhibited flu symptoms, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping said Monday.
Angping said the footballer has already been taken to the children’s clinic after he developed fever.
"I hope he tests negative for A (H1N1). If negative, I will appeal to Singapore authorities to allow them to play," he said in an ABS-CBN interview.
Singapore’s Health Ministry confirmed on Saturday that one Filipino youth football player, Claudio Lopa, tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus. The RP youth football team arrived in Singapore on Thursday for the Asian Youth Games from June 29 to July 7.
The team members are undergoing quarantine at a hotel where no one can visit them, not even their parents. The athletes’ parents just send food for their kids.
Angping, who arrived in Singapore Sunday night, added that the footballers’ “participation is still questionable.”
The footballers were not able to join the pre-elimination tournament. The Asian Youth Games announced that matches involving the Philippines would be postponed while the rest of the events will go on as scheduled.
Angping also said that he still does not know if the other Philippine teams will be allowed to play. “Hindi po natin alam. I have to talk to Singapore authorities.”
He said that eight more Filipino youth teams are set to arrive in Singapore on Friday or Saturday.
