Never-say-die Ginebra weathers Alaska
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra battled its way from 17 points down to edge Alaska in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday.
The Gin Kings had to shake off a bad first half, wherein they only shot 12 of 38, in order to survive the Aces.
"It was an ugly first half. Bugbog na nga ang ring sa amin, eh," said Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen in PBA.ph.
Alaska, already eliminated from the Governors Cup race, played pressure-free and drained 20 of 40 shots in the first 2 quarters and led, 46-29.
Rico Villanueva stepped up for the Kings in the second half, scoring 8 of his 12 points in the third quarter. KG Canaleta was also a big help for Ginebra as he tallied all of his 9 points in the second half.
Mark Caguioa was the biggest hero for the Kings. He knocked down 15 of his 22 points in the last 24 minutes of play to boost Ginebra’s chances of reaching the semis.
The Kings need to beat Talk ‘N Text and Barako Bull to secure a spot in the top 6 and a sure entry in the semifinals.
"We're far from safe," said Tanquingcen. "Kailangan pa ng mga panalo, knowing na carryover. Gusto namin makakuha pa ng mga panalo as much as we could."
Alaska’s Jason Forte had 20 points and 18 rebounds, but could only buy 7 points in the second half.
Cyrus Baguio, who scored 10 points in first two quarters, could only manage 1 point in the final 24 minutes.
