MANILA - The Singapore Ministry of Health denied Tuesday the request of the Philippine Sports Commission to shorten the mandatory quarantine period of the Philippine football team to the First Asian Youth Games in the city.
After the quarantine, the team will go back to the Philippines, effectively ending their participation in the sports competition.
"Our football team's appeal is denied. They are scheduled to arrive [in Manila] on the 28th of June after the quarantine period is over," RP team chef de mission Col. Cesar Binag said in a text message to ABS-CBN News.
On Monday, PSC chair Harry Angping made the request, to shorten the mandatory seven-day quarantine period to four days to allow the Philippine football team to play its last two elimination round games in the games in Singapore.
The team was quarantined in a resort in Singapore after one of the athletes, a 14-year-old boy, tested positive for influenza A (H1N1).
The player arrived from Philippines with 17 other teammates and two coaches Thursday, and showed signs of fever after practicing the following day.
Another member of the RP football team was tested due to colds but was found “negative” of the dreaded virus. With reports from Jeff Canoy, ABS-CBN News, and The Philippine Star
