MANILA, Philippines – Nacho Beristain, the trainer of Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez, believes a fourth bout between his fighter and Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will be a much better fight than a Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley rematch.
Marquez and Bradley were Pacquiao’s most recent opponents, and the results of the two fights were both controversial.
Pacquiao beat Marquez via majority decision last November in a close fight that many felt could have gone to Marquez.
Then, last June 9, Pacquiao shockingly lost to Bradley despite dominating majority of the rounds..
“Bob Arum and Fernando Beltran, the promoters for Pacquiao and Marquez, are intelligent and looking for good profits,” Beristain told Boxing Scene.
“I think it’s better to make the fourth fight between Marquez and Pacquiao,” he added.
Pacquiao-Marquez IV has been gaining steam lately, though Arum insisted that he has yet to talk to Pacquiao about his next fight.
Pacquiao has said he plans to meet with Arum in July.
But Beristain believes there is a big chance that a fourth bout will happen.
“Right now, there is an 80% chance,” he told Boxing Scene. “It’s a fight that generates more public interest and more money than a rematch with Timothy Bradley."
Arum has admitted that Top Rank will most likely not pursue a Pacquiao-Bradley rematch, calling it a “hard sell” because majority of boxing fans saw it as a one-sided bout in Pacquiao’s favor.
