Bradley's youth, speed will be keys vs Marquez
MANILA, Philippines – Reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Timothy Bradley believes he holds only two distinct advantages against Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez when they face off on October 12.
“I think the only advantages right now, that I have, is youth and hand speed,” Bradley told ESPN. “That’s the only advantage in the fight at the moment.” [http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9406743&categoryid=2491554]
The 29-year-old Bradley acknowledged that he is unlikely to surprise the crafty Mexican, who has been in the ring with some of the greatest fighters in the world, including Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Marquez has seen every style and he’s fought everybody,” Bradley said. “Am I going to show him something that he’s never seen before? I’m sure I’m not.”
“But the thing is, I think my youth will be factor in this fight, and my speed will be a factor in this fight,” he added. “Those are the two keys that I have to win this fight.”
Marquez, for his part, has already scouted Bradley, having watched his March 2013 bout against Russia’s Ruslan Provodnikov.
“I watched his fight with Provodnikov, and I think the key is to land many punches in the body of Bradley,” Marquez said in a separate ESPN interview. “I need to land combinations in his face and in the body.”
“The most important for this fight is my speed. Speed is important because Bradley, he lands his punches with speed too,” he added.
But Bradley warned that Marquez will have to deal with his ring smarts as well.
“A lot of people will realize I’m very intelligent, too. I’m very intelligent in the ring. I’m not a stupid fighter, man,” he said.
“I’m very smart, but he’s very intelligent as well,” Bradley added. “So I think it’s gonna be a chess match early on, and once we get comfortable in there, things will start exploding and erupting in the middle rounds.”
