Filipino-Romanian picked 7th in NHL draft
MANILA, Philippines – A hockey player of Filipino descent was drafted in the first round of the National Hockey League entry draft last weekend in Pennsylvania.
Filipino-Romanian Mathew Dumba, a 17-year-old defenseman, was selected seventh overall in the first round by the Minnesota Wild.
Born to a Romanian father and a Filipina mother, Dumba played for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League the past three seasons, winning the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie after the 2010-2011 season.
Dumba was ranked among the top North American skaters based on the NHL scouting report.
But he is not expected to play immediately for Minnesota, as the Wild will most likely let him develop further in the minor leagues. -- Report from ANC.
