Algieri: Pacquiao very different from Ruslan
MANILA, Philippines – WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri admits he has to make adjustments if given the opportunity to fight Manny Pacquiao.
Algieri, who pulled off a major upset against “Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov two weeks ago, is hoping to land a lucrative bout with the Filipino superstar in November.
But the undefeated American is aware that he will have to climb the welterweight division if he gets picked as Pacquiao’s next opponent.
He also said he will have to adjust his fighting style since Pacquiao is a very different fighter compared to Provodnikov.
“Definitely I've got to tweak it, you know Manny Pacquiao's a very different fighter than Provodnikov.,” said Algieri in a video interview on Boxing Scene.
“He's a lot more energetic, he moves a lot more, quicker. His pressure isn't the same. The way he utilizes his ring movements is definitely very different.”
But Algieri believes Provodnikov is the stronger fighter. “Both are strong guys, but I don't think that Manny's physically strong as Ruslan is,” he said.
Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight champion, has yet to decide who to take on when he fights again on November 23 in Macau.
Juan Manuel Marquez is the leading contender for the fight, but the Mexican has remained non-committal with regards to another rematch with the Filipino boxer.
Other candidates include Algieri, Provodnikov and Carlos Abregu.
