Pinoy athletes nominated in ESPY awards
MANILA, Philippines – Two prominent Filipino athletes were nominated for ESPN's Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) awards.
Filipino ring icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is among the 2014 ESPY nominees for Best Fighter, after he regained his WBO welterweight belt by beating American boxer Timothy Bradley Jr. in their rematch last April.
Unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. is also nominated for the Best Fighter award. Other nominees include American boxer Andre Ward, UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones, and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.
Meanwhile, Filipino-American Raymond Martin made the cut as one of this year’s nominees for Best Male Athlete with Disability.
Martin became the first man to win five gold medals in an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Championship. Competing for the United States, he has won titles in the T-52 for 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m races.
Martin, the 2013 United States Olympic Male Paralympic Athlete of the Year, also swept the same five events at the US Paralympic Track and Field National Championship last year.
