MANILA -- Nigerian Sam Ekwe has already carved his legend. It’s now American Sudan Daniel’s time.
Led by the high-leaping 6’8” Daniel, San Beda steamrolled a hapless Mapua side, 85-52, Saturday to set in motion its four-peat aspirations in Season 85 of the NCAA cage wars before a full-house crowd at the Big Dome.
Daniel, who came from Compton Dominguez or the same high school 2009 NBA rookie top pick Blake Griffin of the Clippers and the Hornets’ Tyson Chandler attended, was effortless in piling up huge numbers—13 points, nine boards, five blocks, two assists and no errors.
“Sam taught me a lot of things like staying humble and keeping my cool,” said the 21-year-old Daniel.
Truly, Daniel’s presence was enough to fill the gaping hole left by Ekwe, who completed his eligibility years along with Pong Escobal and Ogie Menor. And he did all these things in just 22 minutes of play.
“I told him (Daniel) I don’t need him to show the ‘wow things’ because I only want him to play straight basketball. That’s what he did, he decently,” said Lim, who is still mourning the passing away of his father.
The win should also serve as a portent of things to come to the rest of them.
“It’s always nice winning your first game,” said Lim. “This is also a statement win, that we’re back and we’re going for a four-peat.”
The Cardinals, who were paced by Mark Acosta and Paul Sinco's 10 points, obviously missed the services of 2007 MVP Kevlin dela Pena, Neil Pascual and Ian Mazo, who have all graduated.
