Golden Boy exec blasts Arum for Mares comments
MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer blasted his Top Rank counterpart, Bob Arum, after the latter made comments regarding a potential fight between Abner Mares and Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.
Donaire, who is promoted by Top Rank, is willing to fight Golden Boy boxer Mares, but Arum said Mares’ involvement with network Showtime will prevent that fight.
Arum claims Mares will have to be willing to move to HBO in order to fight Donaire in a title-unification bout.
But Schaefer said this was simply not true.
“I saw these comments that he (Arum) made about Showtime... Thre are no agreements (binding Mares to either HBO or Showtime),” Schaefer told Boxing Scene.
Moreover, Schaefer said the Top Rank chief’s comments were “just typical Arum.”
“Everybody is so tired of this guy. He lives in a different era, the Ice Age. It’s just surprising that HBO is dealing with him, because HBO is going to get fooled again,” Schaefer said.
“Everybody who deals with this guy gets fooled,” he added.
Schaefer believes that if Mares and Donaire want to fight, they should go to the network “where they could make the most money.”
But Schaefer does not think that the Mares-Donaire fight will ever happen, and again, it is because of Arum.
“Now he’s talking about a Donaire-Mares fight because that’s what everybody would like to see, but he’s not serious. We know that,” Schaefer said.
“The unfortunate thing is he gets fight fans fired up and excited about certain match-ups that people would like to see, and in the end, he doesn’t deliver,” he added.
