Ateneo sweeps PNP in V-League
MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles made quick work of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Lady Patrollers in their first game of the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference, winning in straight sets Sunday at the San Juan Arena.
With birthday girl Alyssa Valdez leading the way with 19 points, the Lady Eagles carved out a 25-15, 25-12, and 25-21 victory in just over an hour to open their V-League campaign on a bright note.
Ateneo won the first two sets in straight forward fashion, allowing Coach Tai Bundit the opportunity to give his rookies playing time in the third set.
“We’ve been training with them (the rookies) for almost two months, so naka-adjust na kami,” said Valdez, who turned 21 today. “As far as we are concerned, okay naman ang ginagalaw ng mga rookies namin, at sana magtuloy-tuloy na.”
PNP put up a fight in the third set, however, with Frances Molina and Christine Maderazo both scoring on crosscourt attacks to keep the Lady Patrollers within striking distance.
Ateneo was able to hold them off, however, with a PNP error putting the Lady Eagles at set point. Valdez, who had sat out most of the third set, was sent in for what will be the final service of the match. PNP mishandled the reception, and Aerieal Patnongon took advantage of the miscue to score the match point.
Michelle Morente scored 13 points for the Lady Eagles, while Amy Ahomiro added eight points and Kim Gequillana added seven points.
Molina finished with 12 points for the Lady Patrollers, but none of her teammates scored more than six points.
Ateneo scored 45 points on attacks to only 27 by PNP, and had six blocks to PNP’s zero. Ateneo also registered nine aces, with Gequillana scoring three of her points from the service line.
Setter Julia Morado also had a solid game with five points and 36 excellent sets.
