Christine Toledo, a Filipino-American Muay Thai champion, has been in the thick of training for her July 25 fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.
But she had to fly to the Philippines because of her grandmother’s passing.
“I could have easily canceled this fight so that I can tend to family and spend time with them while in the Philippines,” she said in a statement.
Toledo arrived in the country last June 27 and is set to stay until July 7.
“But I realized I could use my lola’s death as a special motivation to make me stronger and keep me even more focused,” she added, noting that she is dedicating the July 25 fight to her grandmother.
“There's nothing I would change about the way she raised me. She is the reason why I have such a big heart and a positive outlook on life.”
Her fight on July 25 pits her against a still unidentified Chinese fighter. The event features Muay Thai fighters from the US and China, said a post on a KungFuMagazine.com forum.
She will continue her training regimen for the clash at the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City. She plans to train under Kru Zhie Vallega at the Muay Thai Vallega Camp from July 1 to July 7.
Technical fighter
Toledo is world No. 1 in her weight division (112 lbs. to 118 lbs.) at the Women's International Kickboxing Association, stated her official website (www.christinetoledo.com).
She was born in Norfolk, Virginia while her hometown is San Diego, California. She is based in Las Vegas where she trains under Master Chan and Anthony Badua.
Toledo, whose ring name is “Blade,” has a win-loss record of 14-2. She won her last fight in 2002 against Jennifer Kelly by unanimous decision. She stands at 5’4.’’
She uses her “arsenal not only to strike with, but to cut open her opponents,” stated her website. “Christine is regarded as a technical fighter who is able to execute her fights with strategy behind her game.”
Toledo started her disciplinary training in Muay Thai during her last year of college. She has trained in Thailand as well as at Master
Toddy’s Muay Thai Academy.
She has even appeared in a television reality series and some film productions featuring female Muay Thai fighters.
