MANILA - Japeth Aguilar will finally see action with Powerade-Team Pilipinas when the Nationals face the visiting Soldiers of God team at The Arena in San Juan on Thursday.

The 6’9” Aguilar, who was dubbed by RP Team coach Yeng Guiao as the “country’s next dominant big man,” will get to showcase his talent against the evangelical Soldiers of God, consisting of Division I players in the US National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

According to PBA.ph, Aguilar joined the RP squad Monday night for his first practice session where he impressed Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios, league operations chief Rickie Santos, and Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta.

He also gained raves from fellow teammates Kerby Raymundo, Sonny Thoss and Mick Pennisi.

“Nakaka-ilang talaga,” said Raymundo. “Ang laki tapos ang haba pa ng mga kamay.”

Pennisi, who helps team captain Asi Taulava at the center position, was amazed at Aguilar’s progress from the last time he saw him with the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

“He’s athletic, he’s young, and he’s got shot-blocking presence. He’s gonna fit in every well with our team, just a great addition,” said Pennisi.

Thoss was astonished by Aguilar’s abilities after seeing one his shots batted away and getting dunked on.

“He looks really good, very athletic, long arms, good shotblocker,” said Thoss. “I don’t think he’s even shown his full potential yet.”

Aguilar said he is grateful for the warm welcome he received from his teammates.

“Masayang-masaya ako, at gusto ko talaga na makatulong sa RP team,” he said.

Guiao, whose ballclub Burger King could end up drafting Aguilar should he decide to turn pro this year, was also impressed.

“He’s a little bit more mobile, he’s got better footwork, and I guess the best thing about him is he’s got better touch from the outside,” said Guiao.

The RP Team coach said they will still study Aguilar’s possible role in the squad. He added that among the things to be considered is how the former Blue Eagle can adjust with the system.

With his long wingspan, Aguilar could be directed toward defense and rebounding, Guiao said.

“We’re not looking for him to score a bunch of points.” Guiao said.
