MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine's prized rookie Paul Lee is the PBA's Player of the Week for the period of June 25 to July 1 after helping the Elasto Painters clinch the best record in the Governors Cup at the end of the elimination round.
Lee, a standout from the University of the East, scored 18 points on top of five assists in Rain or Shine’s 92-90 victory over the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters last Sunday.
That victory allowed the Elasto Painters to close out the elimination round with an 8-1 record, two games ahead of their closest pursuer, the B-Meg Llamados.
Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao praised Lee’s “energy and tenacity,” noting that the rookie’s efforts also fired up his more veteran teammates.
"He backs his words up with his deeds, that is why he is considered one of this team’s true leaders," Guiao told PBA.ph.
Lee, who drained four of his seven attempts from beyond the arc in their win against TNT, said team effort was the key to their victory.
"I just tried to do my best, and team effort really paid off," he said. "We just followed Coach Yeng's instructions to take away their dribble-drive penetrations."
"We also limited some of their major contributors, like Ranidel (de Ocampo) and their import. The team did great effort on defense, especially in the last part of the game," Lee added.
It is the second time that Lee has won the Player of the Week plum. He also won the award for the period of May 21-27.
