MANILA -- Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire credited boxing legend Alexis Arguello as a very big influence in crafting his fighting skills, particularly how to throw his killer left hook.
Donaire revealed to Examiner.com’s Dennis Guillermo that when he was just starting out as a boxer, he was imitating Arguello’s left hook.
“When we were younger… my dad was teaching us to throw his (Arguello) left hook. I was at that time learning how to throw a left hook and my brother (Glen Donaire) was teaching me ‘this is how Arguello throws his punches, this is how he does it,’” he said.
It is the same left hook he used to knock out Australia-based Armenian Vic Darchinyan in July 2007.
“Right now, I have a lot of his fights and collections and we were watching through it here in Undisputed [boxing gym],” said Donaire.
Arguello, known as "The Explosive Thin Man," was a three-time world champion and one of the legendary boxers in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He became a politician after retirement, before allegedly committing suicide on July 1, 2009.
Donaire has relinquished his International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization flyweight titles to fight Panama’s Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion in the super flyweight division.
Donaire and Concepcion will be fighting it out for the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight championship on August 15.
If the Filipino succeeds, he will proceed to campaign against Darchiyan for the WBA, IBF and World Boxing Council super flyweight titles.
