MANILA - The Philippine Volcanoes have been promoted to the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division II after sweeping the final Saturday afternoon in Parañaque City.
The Philippines dominated Guam, 25-0, as stated on the event’s official website http://www.a5nrugby.com.
The Philippine rugby team was seeded first in the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division III while Guam was the second seed.
Prior to the final, the Philippines team also scored a shutout win over Iran last Wednesday, 18-0. Guam, meantime, defeated Indonesia, 23-3, to set up a finals rematch with the Philippines.
Saturday’s final was supposed to be a chance for Guam to get back at the Philippines after the RP team beat Guam, 20-8, at the Guam Regional Tournament in 2008.
With the Division III win, the Philippines will next face Thailand, China and India in the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division II Tournament in 2010.
Meanwhile, Iran and Indonesia also clashed last Saturday to determine the third and fourth placers of Division III. Iran, seeded fourth, defeated No. 3 seed Indonesia, 48-13.
