MANLA, Philippines -- Team Philippines on Friday launched its quest for a sustainable energy future at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia at the Sepang International Circuit at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Composed of the country’s engineering students from De La Salle University (DLUS)-Manila, Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP)-Manila and Quezon City, University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman and the University of San Carlos (USC), Team Philippines will race with their cutting-edge vehicle designs.

Competing against teams from 18 countries across Asia, Team Philippines seeks to clinch greater triumphs and improve its performance from last year.

UP and Mapua Institute of Technology (MIP) won both On-Track and Off-Track Awards during last year’s edition of the Shell Eco-Marathon.

The eco-marathon challenges young engineers to design, build and drive a vehicle that can travel the farthest distance on the least amount of fuel and lowest possible CO2 emissions.

In the remaining two days of the Shell eco-marathon, the teams will showcase their innovations and make as many attempts as they can to go the furthest on the equivalent of a single liter of fuel.
