The UFC 176 pay-per-view event, scheduled for August 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, has been postponed after headliner and featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered an injury, the UFC announced.

Aldo, who was supposed to defend his belt against top contender Chad Mendes, suffered a shoulder injury that will sideline him for three to four weeks.

UFC decided to postpone the entire fight card in light of the situation.

Meanwhile, the title bout between Aldo and Mendes "is expected to take place later this year," the UFC said. All the other fights that were scheduled to take place in the card are also being re-scheduled for other events.

According to ESPN, this is only the second time in UFC history that they cancelled an entire event. UFC 151, scheduled for September 2012 in Las Vegas, was scrapped when challenger Dan Henderson suffered an injury prior to his bout against defending champion Jon "Bones" Jones.

UFC 177 will still be held on August 30 at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, as scheduled.
