Alves: I’m gonna knock out GSP
Thiago "Pitbull" Alves is confident that he’s going to shock the world by knocking out mixed martial arts (MMA) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre when they meet inside the Octagon in UFC 100 this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
“When that cage is closed, I'm gonna shout [to] the world I'm gonna take the best pound for pound fighter and I’m gonna knock him out,” said the Brazilian knockout artist in a promo video posted on UFC.com.
At stake in the welterweight match up will be St-Pierre’s UFC title. The fight is one of the major features in UFC 100 slated to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alves, who has an MMA record of 22-4-0, is coming off seven straight victories.
“I don't think he has any advantage in this fight,” said Alves referring to St-Pierre. “The only advantage he got is that he has a bigger name now.”
The Brazilian said he would very much like to engage GSP in a stand up fight.
“I'm the guy who loves to stand up and doesn't like to go to the ground. If he takes me to the ground I'm gonna get up again,” said Alves.
‘I’ll pick his weaknesses’
St-Pierre acknowledged that he’s going to have his hands full against Alves who is deemed to be the stronger fighter.
However, he said that fighting inside the Octagon is not about strength.
“A fight is not only a question of strength. It’s a mix of skill and a variety of techniques and strategy,” said St-Pierre.
GSP has won 18 out of the 20 fights he has had and most of them, he said, was won through smart thinking.
“I'm a smart fighter, I'm gonna fight against his weaknesses not against his strengths,” said St-Pierre.
St-Pierre said that whoever dictates the pace will control the fight and eventually takes the UFC title.
He is confident that he’d be the one doing the dictating.
“I'm gonna be the one who will dictate the pace,” said St-Pierre. “I'm be the one who will control the fight.”
