MANILA -- Boxing champ Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire merely shrugged off Vic Darchinyan’s pronouncements about tearing him down.
In fact, he said Darchinyan acts very differently whenever he’s nearby.
“He acts tough and rough, but when I'm in front of him, he acts like a scared dog, but that's Darchinyan for you,” Donaire told Percy Crawford of FightHype.com.
Darchinyan, who currently holds the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing federation (IBF) super flyweight titles, earlier said that Donaire’s win over him was just because of sheer luck.
Donaire thinks otherwise.
“If they felt I was lucky and he could beat me, they would have got that rematch right away. It took him a long time to even call me out,” said Donaire.
In that fight, the Filipino knocked out Darchinyan with a perfect left hook to the jaw in the fifth round. The punch was picture perfect that some boxing analysts said the Armenian was “knocked out silly”.
Donaire’s win was declared by The Ring Magazine as “The Knockout of the Year” and “Upset of the Year” in 2007.
“I knocked him out bad,” said Donaire. “And he was hurting because I took everything away from him; his perfect record, not being down, not being hurt or being cut. i took all of that away from him with one punch.”
Darchinyan earlier vowed to avenge his loss to Donaire.
“If I meet him [again], I'm gonna break him,” he told sports writer Dennis Principe over Sports Chat radio show in dzSR.
Both boxers are currently preparing for their respective fights.
Darchinyan will slug it out with Joseph Agbeko on July 11 for the IBF bantamweight title while Donaire is preparing for his showdown with Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion on August 15 for the WBA interim super flyweight title.
