MANILA -- Jose Rizal’s John Wilson is no stranger to shooting the lights out of the venue.
On a rainy, gloomy Friday, Wilson heated up and lit The Arena a bit with an entertaining shooting display.
Unleashing one of his best scoring efforts, Wilson detonated a 22-point bomb as Jose Rizal destroyed Emilio Aguinaldo, 83-69, to join San Sebastian at the helm with three straight wins in Season 85 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Called “The Battle of Heroes” because of their school that was named after the countries’ national heroes, the Bombers emerged with more artillery and firepower to show with Wilson coming out the most destructive of them all.
In 29 minutes he was unleashed on the floor, Wilson plowed his way through the General’s plastic-thin defense by burying four booming triples and going five-of-five from the two-point area where he drove with impunity.
What’s so impressive about this four-year guard, who honed his skills from playing for Noose Shoes and then titled Oracle Residences in the PBL, he was also felt all over the court with 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists without turning the ball even once.
His coach was impressed.
“He played big for us again, that’s how consistent he is,” said Jose Rizal mentor Ariel Vanguardia of Wilson, one of the league’s scoring leaders with an average of 20-plus points a game.
The Generals fell to their third setback in row.
Wilson, however, didn’t do it alone.
Skipper Mar Cagoco missed 10 of the 15 shots he attempted but managed to chip in 14 points while Ildefonso Bulangis, Marvin Hayes and James Sena added 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively to help in the cause.
At first though, the Bombers had a hard time putting the Generals away.
After going into the break with a shaky 37-33 lead, the Bombers went on an attacking mode and blew the opposition by whipping up a third quarter storm that turned a small lead to a huge 64-44 advantage going into the final canto.
And then it was all garbage points in the fourth period.
