MANILA - The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors scored an emphatic 65-46 win against the rookie-laden De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers before a sea of red and green in the 72nd University Atheltics Assocation of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Big Dome.
After a tight first quarter that saw the Archers with a 10-9 lead, the Red Warriors methodically dismantled the Taft-based dribblers through Pari Llagas' inside game and Paul Lee's brilliant playmaking.
UE took the second period, closing half-time in its favor with a 30-24 lead.
In the third quarter, DLSU rookie Joseph Marata scored back-to-back treys to pull the Archers within striking distance.
The Red Warriors, however, sparked a searing 15-0 run from the 8:02 mark in the fourth quarter to push the score to 63-41.
The game eventually closed at 65-46 in favor of UE.
The inexperience of the young DLSU squad was evident. Statistics showed they missed 53 of their 70 shots for a paltry 24 percent field goal shooting.
The 46 was the league's lowest team-output since the University of the Philippines scored 45 against DLSU in September 3, 2005.
Not one Green Archer scored in double figures in this game. Even DLSU veteran James Mangahas was held to nine points.
In contrast, UE mainstays posted huge numbers. Llagas scored a team-high 15 points. Paul Lee registered 11 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, while Elmer Espiritu came up with a 9-point,14-rebound and 3-block effort.
The Red Warriors dedicated their victory to the late Rolando "Brenn" Perez, their long-time representative to the UAAP Board, who succumbed to a heart attack Friday night. Alder Almo
