Mathebula has broken jaw from Donaire fight
MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. not only broke Jeffrey Mathebula’s tooth during their title unification bout, he actually busted the South African’s jaw.
The California Boxing Commission (CBC) doctor initially diagnosed Mathebula with having a broken tooth following the South African’s 12-round defeat to Donaire.
But according to a report by Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz, Mathebula was found out to have suffered a broken jawbone during the fight.
“We initially thought that it was tooth problem but it is in fact a broken jaw,” said Mathebula’s promoter Branco Milenkovic.
He added that the fallen boxer is already booked to undergo surgery.
Donaire unified the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight titles by stomping Mathebula with a unanimous decision.
Milenkovic suspected that Donaire inflicted the damage via the huge left hook that dropped the South African in the 4th round.
“Mathebula could not speak after the fourth round, which underlines the pain he was feeling,” said the promoter.
He also praised Mathebula for finishing the fight despite the pain in his jaw.
“He did not let everyone see it because he wanted to fight on like the true soldier he is,” said Milenkovic.
