MANILA – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar accomplished his goal to get even with Frank Mir by retaining his title via a second round technical knockout in UFC 100.

Minnesota’s Lesnar crushed Mir before his home crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada (Sunday in Manila).

“He did a good job,” said Mir as quoted by Thomas Gerbasi of UFC.com. “He neutralized the standup, got me against the cage, and I guess I’ve got something to work on.”

Lesnar avenged his first career loss to Mir in UFC 81 by learning from his mistakes. “Lesnar stayed close and kept his cool, making sure he didn’t get overaggressive like he did in their first fight, which would allow Mir to take advantage and lock in a submission,” wrote Gerbasi.

“And despite the chants of the crowd to stand up the fighters, Lesnar was consistently working, and after another series of huge ground strikes, Mir was left with nowhere to go,” Gerbasi added.

Referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the fight at 1:48 in Round 2. Lesnar now has four wins and one less while Mir has 12 victories and four defeats.

Rush, Hendo prevail

UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St-Pierre struggled to defend his title but still emerged victorious against Thiago “Pitbull” Alves.

“Thiago Alves was my toughest opponent so far,” St-Pierre told UFC.com. “He’s gonna gain from this experience.”

St-Pierre clinched a five-round unanimous decision victory even if he suffered groin injury in the third round. The judges’ scores were 50-45, 50-45, and 50-44 in favor of St-Pierre.

“I’m in real bad pain,” said St-Pierre, who now has 19 wins to two defeats. “It could have been a real bad night for me.”

Alves, meantime, has 22 wins and five losses.

In the middleweight clash featuring Dan “Hendo” Henderson and Michael “the Count” Bisping, it was the former who was victorious in the Octagon.

Henderson knocked out Bisping with 3:20 in the second round. “Hendo” improves his record to 25-7 while Bisping slumps to 18-2.

In the other featured matches, Jon Fitch won by unanimous decision over Paulo Thiago with the scores 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.

Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama, meantime, defeated Alan Belcher by split decision. Scores were 30-27, 29-28, and 28-29 for the Japanese.
