Kobe: No invite for Manila exhibition games
MANILA, Philippines – Five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant said he has yet to get an invite to the supposed series of exhibition games against Smart-Gilas Pilipinas and a PBA selection late this month.
“I saw something about that but I haven’t heard anything,” the Los Angeles Lakers star said during the press conference in Manila.
Bryant was rumored to be joining a star-studded NBA selection that will play a couple of exhibition games in Manila.
The NBA selection reportedly includes Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, Chicago Bulls and reigning MVP Derrick Rose, MinnesotaTimberwolves’ Darko Milicic, Sacramento Kings’ Tyreke Evans, Los Angeles Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan, and Miami Heat’s Mario Chalmers.
“I haven’t heard of anything yet. I don’t know what the heck’s going on,” said Bryant.
The 32-year-old shooting guard said he only got word about the supposed games following his arrival in Manila.
“I read about it but that’s the first time I heard about it,” said Bryant.
Organizers of the basketball event are scheduled to disclose the full details of the games this Friday.
Bryant arrived in Manila for his 5-city Nike “Take Every Advantage” Asia tour.
After the press conference, Bryant went to a Gawad Kalinga village in Barangay Pinagsama, Taguig for a mini basketball clinic with several Filipino kids.
The children, who are part of Gawad Kalinga’s SIGA program, were given free Nike shoes, apart from the rare opportunity of playing with the NBA great.
“It’s very important to give them the opportunity to be successful,” said Bryant.
He also made an appearance at the Nike Park in Taguig City for a meet and greet with his fans.
Bryant said he is considering to bring his basketball camp to the Philippines.
The Nike “Take Every Advantage” Asia tour in Manila will culminate with this trade mark "Blackout Drill" at the Araneta Coliseum following an exhibition game between Smart-Gilas Pilipinas and UAAP-NCAA selection.
