‘Filipino Flash’ tells the Cuban to fall in line

MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. believes Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux will be a very boring fight for him.

This is why he thinks the Cuban boxer is having a hard time getting matched against him.

"HBO doesn't want to match me with him for the fact that it might be a boring fight. They don't want another Narvaez. That's why they'd rather pick a [Jorge] Arce, or an [Arturo] Gatti type of fighter, because it's exciting for them, because there's blood and that kind of stuff," Donaire told the Examiner.

Donaire, who recently unified the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) 122-pound titles, said that Rigondeaux has to fall in line first if he really wants the fight.

He added that callouts don’t make fights.

“I'll say 'this and this and that', I'll say 'hey I want to fight [Abner] Mares', 'hey I want to fight [Toshiaki] Nishioka', they're going to take it in consideration, but they got to talk to the guys, and the guys that represent them, the networks and all that stuff. It takes a long time. Imagine that?” said Donaire.

"What people fail to see is that the negotiation is what makes the fight happen," said the Filipino-American.

Top Rank is already lining up the Filipino Flash against Arce for a bout in October.

Other possible fights include those against Nishioka, Mares and Rigondeaux.
