Fil-German wants to play for RP in Davis Cup
Talented 20-year-old Fil-German Marc Sieber has indicated his desire to represent the Philippines in Davis Cup competition and in other tournaments.
Stefan Wechslberger, CEO of Global Sports Management, said in an e-mail to PHILTA official Randy Villanueva that he "already spoke with Marc and he would be proud to support and help to make tennis popular in the Philippines". Sieber's mother is Filipino.
The Global Sports Management top executive said Sieber would be a great ambassador for Philippine tennis in the future. He added that it would be "a great challenge and big step for Marc to play and appear officially for the Philippines in Davis Cup competitions and in the ATP World Rankings."
Wechslberger said Sieber was "very pleased" when he heard about the interest shown in his representing the Philippines in the Davis Cup and was "very excited to discuss the possibility." In fact he is keen on playing for the Philippines in the crucial Davis Cup playoffs against Kazakhstan from September 19-21.
The sports management company represents some 60 professional tennis players, including Thailand ’s Danai Udomchoke , Korea ’s Hyung-Taik Lee and "Randy" Yen-Hsub Lu and Jimmy Wang from Chinese-Taipei aside from Sieber .
Sieber, who stands over 5’8", is a five-timer winner in the Junior Championships in Germany, three times in singles and twice in doubles.
Following his runner-up finish in the Austria F5 Futures last July 8 where he beat Matthew Roberts of the US in the semifinals 5-7/6-3/6-1 and losing to Austria’s Armin Sandbichlar in the finals, Sieber improved to No. 542 in the ATP singles rankings . He is ranked No. 563 in the doubles.
With lefty Eric Taino unlikely to represent the Philippines any longer due to business commitments, Sieber could be a major addition to the squad in support of No.1 singles player Cecil Mamiit whose last ATP ranking was 514. Ronnie Nathanieslz
