Skaters vie for chance in Winter Olympics
MANILA -- Forty Filipino figure skaters will battle it out in the 2009 Philippine National Figure Skating Championships, to be held at the SM Mall of Asia International Skating Rink on July 18 and 19 for a chance to be part of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The top winners in the nationals will be sent to represent the country in the 2009 Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, a competition designated by the Ice Skating Union to fill the remaining slots in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The nationals will pick one male and one female skater from the senior division to carry the Philippine flag.
Also happening on the same week is the first ever intercontinental ice hockey competition to hit the country – the Philippine International Ice Hockey Tournament 2009, organized by the First Philippine Ice Events Org.
The ice hockey tournament will feature a men’s team division and will fly in three teams, each consisting of seventeen players, from Shanghai, Bangkok and Qatar to allow them to experience playing the fast-paced and very physical team sport in Philippines.
