MANILA – The Tigers are indeed hungry.
The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers ripped the National University Bulldogs, 104-89, during Thursday’s 72nd University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Araneta Coliseum.
Senior forward Dylan Ababou atoned for his measly 10-point performance in the Tigers’ season debut by posting a career-high 30 points that went with 10 rebounds and three assists.
UST now has two wins in as many starts.
Ababou, described by his coach Pido Jarencio as the best small forward in the league, scored 16 points in the second quarter when UST pulled away for good by taking a comfortable 62-49 lead.
“Bumawi si Dylan (Ababou). Nung last game, nag-cramps siya sa last quarter kaya gusto niyang bumawi,” Jarencio said of his prized ward.
The Tigers, who built a 23-point lead in the closing minutes of the third canto, reached the century mark on the strength of a 49.4 percent shooting from the field.
The Tigers’ season-high offensive output was the highest since Ateneo posted 114 points against UST back in the 2006 season.
The 6-fot-3 Ababou got plenty of help from fellow senior Kahsim Mirza, who had 19 points, 15 boards and six feeds.
Earlier, Tiger rookie Jeric Teng scored 13 of his 14 points in the opening quarter as the Tigers zoomed to a 32-24 lead.
Sophomore point guard Jeric Fortuna and rookie Allein Maliksi were the other Tigers in double figures contributing 14 and 10 points, respectively.
“Gutom ang mga batang ‘to. Mapa-rookie, mapa-beterano, may gusto silang patunayan. Kapag ang tigre gutom, kahit ano kinakain,” Jarencio said in jest.
NU, which failed to follow-up its stirring opening day win, was led by rookie Ajeet Singh and Melvin Baloran with 19 points apiece. -- Alder T. Almo
