Team Gesta welcomes Barnett's trash talk
MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten Filipino lightweight Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is not bothered by the trash talk of his August 3 opponent, American boxer Ty Barnett.
Gesta will face Barnett in ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on August 3 in Las Vegas, and the American told Dennis Guillermo of Examiner that he will “expose” the “overrated” Gesta.
In reponse, Gesta, who has a record of 25 wins and one draw, told Guillermo that he does not really engage in trash-talking with his opponents.
“I just train hard and focus on what I need to do. We’ll see what happens in the ring,” Gesta said.
Meanwhile, Gesta’s manager and trainer Vince Parra welcomed Barnett’s trash-talking.
“That’s good. We like the talk. We just hope he backs it up in the ring,” Parra said.
Gesta is also being trained by his father, Anecito, who said they are working on the boxer’s speed.
“We are also developing his left (hand), as well as adding power to his right, which is his primary weapon,” the elder Gesta said.
“We have a lot more to learn and work on, but I am happy in the progress Mercito has made,” he added.
