MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum's Joseph Gabayni has been named the NCAA Player of the Week after nearly averaging a double-double and helping the Pirates claim the solo fifth spot in the league standings.

The 6-foot-5 Gabayni, a 20-year-old transferee from the University of Santo Tomas, normed 10.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in five games to help the Pirates to a 3-2 win-loss record.

They are currently behind San Beda, Perpetual Help, San Sebastian and Arellano University in the league standings.

Gabayni was excellent in Lyceum's past two games, dropping 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds in an 80-78 win over Mapua last Monday, and then unloading 10 points and 12 boards in an 84-80 overtime win over Jose Rizal University.

"We know that he will be a major piece in our campaign this year, and his recent play is proving me right," said Lyceum coach Bonnie Tan.

Gabayni, a native of Taytay, Rizal, made it to UST's pool but was never in the first team roster, leading to his decision to transfer to Lyceum.

He edged teammates Guy Mbida and Dexter Zamora for the league's weekly plum, backed by Bactigel hand sanitizer, Doctor J alcohol, Mighty Mom anti-bacteria.

Gabayni, however, believes he still has room for improvement.

"I still have so many things to learn and challenges to hurdle. I also need to work harder," Gabayni said in Filipino.
