GM So wins Toronto chess tourney

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino chess prodigy Wesley So clinched another title by winning the crown section of the 2012 Toronto International Chess Championship.

The 17-year-old Grand Master from Bacoor, Cavite won the title in the tournament held at the Annex Chess Club in Toronto, Canada last July 15-20.

The tournament was played as a seven-round Swiss system, with 18 participants and organzed by the Chess Institute of Canada.

So finsihed with a total of six points on account of five wins and two draws, half a point ahead of International Master Nikolay Noritsyn of Canada.

So took home the top purse of $4,000.

Of the 18 players, three were Grand Masters, five were International Masters and two were Fide Masters.

“Winning the prestigious 2012 Toronto International Chess Championship is another good news for Philippine sports,” said Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., the chairman and president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

So will continue his Canadian tour in the Quebec Open Chess Championship, which gets underway on July 21 and will run until July 28 at the College Brebeuf in Montreal, Canada. By Marlon Bernardino.
