Lawler beats Brown to earn title shot
Robbie Lawler earned another shot at the UFC welterweight title after beating Matt Brown in a five-round war Saturday at the SAP Center.
Lawler earned a close unanimous decision over Brown, with judges scoring the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47.
Lawler bloodied Brown right in the opening round, but Brown rallied by trying to take things to the mat in the second and third rounds. Lawler was able to fend off his takedown attempts, however, and got a takedown of his own in the fourth round.
Both fighters exchanged hard shots in the fifth round, but it was Brown who got the better of the exchanges in the early minute. It was Lawler who ended strong, however, withstanding Brown's rallies until the end.
"He went toe-to-toe with me and not many guys would do that," Lawler told UFC.com of Brown.
Lawler is now getting his second chance at the welterweight belt. He had lost a close decision to reigning champion Johny Hendricks when they fought last March.
"I'm very excited," said Lawler. "It's time to go back to work, and I'll be waiting for him."
