UFC champ preps Fil-Am Muñoz for UFC Live
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American Mark Muñoz has gotten ample support from Brazilian Anderson “The Spider” Silva while preparing for his fight in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Live this coming Sunday (Monday in Manila) against Japan’s Yushin Okami.
For Muñoz (8-1), teaming up with Silva will be very beneficial because the UFC middleweight king from Brazil has already fought Okami (25-5).
“Me and Anderson, we get along really well. I've been training with him for a while now. I train with him on and off when he comes in from Brazil, but he's had his camp here [in the US] for this fight for me to help him out,” Muñoz told Dennis Guillermo of Examiner.com.
Silva himself is preparing to defend his title versus Chael Sonnen in UFC 117 on August 14.
“I'm pretty excited. He showed me a lot of stuff, I showed him a lot, it's a two-way relationship so it's pretty cool,” the Fil-Am added.
Silva lost to Okami in 2006 at Rumble on the Rock 8 after being disqualified for an illegal kick.
“Anderson actually told me that after sparring with me, and after fighting Okami, Yushin has nothing for me,” Muñoz continued. “He knows what Okami has, so we’ve been working really hard to understand how he moves and how to counter back. He’s got a lot of great stuff that he’s showing me.”
Muñoz, called “The Filipino Wrecking Machine,” said he plans to take down Okami and pound him out.
The Fil-Am is so psyched to face his Japanese opponent that he tweeted about it via his Twitter account on July 27.
“One more week! Camp is over! The calm before the storm! I’m ready, focused, & determined! Thank u all for your support!,” he said.
The Muñoz vs Okami bout is the main under card in UFC Live: Jones vs Matyushenko which will take place at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California.
Jon “Bones” Jones (10-1) and Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (24-4) headline the fight card.
Other matches feature John “Doomsday” Howard (14-4) vs Jake Ellenberger (22-5), Tyson Griffin (14-3) vs Takanori “The Fireball Kid” Gomi (31-6), Paul “Tellys” Kelly (11-2) vs Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann (10-2), and DaMarques “Darkness” Johnson (16-7) vs Matthew Riddle (4-1).
James “The Sandman” Irvin (14-6-0, 1 no contest) vs Igor Pokrajac (21-7), Brian “All American” Stann (8-3) vs Mike “The Master of Disaster” Massenzio (11-3), Darren “The Damage” Elkins (12-1) vs Charles Oliveira, and Rob “The Rosedale Reaper” Kimmons (22-5) vs Steve “The Hooligan” Steinbeiss (4-3) round up the UFC Live lineup. – With reports from UFC.com and Examiner.com
