Archers nip Falcons in women's basketball
MANILA – The De la Salle Lady Archers pulled off a queen-size upset with a 57-55 squeaker over Adamson Lady Falcons in the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women's basketball in the FEU Gym on Wednesday.
Lady Archer Kady Wilson scored a putback of her miss near the end of regulation, catapulting the Lady Archers to the share of lead in standings.
DLSU is now bunched with AdU and the FEU Lady Tamaraws with identical 3-1 win-loss records.
With the score tied at 55-all, La Salle got the final play after Adamson’s Anna Buendia missed her lay up.
The Lady Archers quickly raced to the court and found the 6’5” Wilson all alone underneath the basket. After a muffed try, she rattled the shot in to the jubilation of the La Salle bench.
“This is a big win for us. But every game, we treat it like a championship game. More than anything, it’s our transition defense which kept us in this game,” said rookie Lady Archers coach Tyrone Bautista said.
The Lady Archers stopped the vaunted running game of the Lady Falcons, limiting them to just four fastbreak points.
Adamson, which cruised to easy wins in their previous three games, found itself trailing by nine, 33-42, with 4:45 remaining in the third period.
Buendia strung up 10 of Adamson’s 14 points in that quarter to close the gap, 42-43, heading into the payoff period.
The Lady Falcons grabbed the lead for the last time, 53-50, on Katherine Sandel’s basket.
Angeli Gloriani, who top scored the Lady Archers with 22 points, made a triple to tie the game.
La Salle went on to nab the lead, keeping it until the final buzzer.
In other games, NU Lady Bulldogs finally barged into the win column beating UP Lady Maroons, 59-47, while UST kept UE winless with a masterful 73-61 victory. The Lady Tams bounced back from their loss to Adamson with a 46-33 win over Ateneo. By Alder T. Almo
