Lopez, Singwancha tangle in crucial tiff
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino WBC super flyweight champion Silvester Lopez and Thai challenger Wandee Singwancha made the 115-pound weight limit for their crucial showdown at the Ynares Center in Pasig City on Saturday.
Under the supervision of Games and Amusement Board (GAB) boxing division chief, Dr. Nasser Cruz, Lopez and Singwancha each tipped the scales at exactly 115 pounds.
Both fighters said they were prepared and ready to go into a match that stakes a possible shot at the regular WBC super flyweight crown vacated by Vic Darchinyan, who has moved up to bantamweight.
“Magandang pagkakataon ito na di ko palalampasin,” said the 22-year-old Lopez as he and the Thai headline the “Bakbakan sa Elorde” card supported by Rizal Gov. Casimiro Ynares Jr. and sponsored by Burlington socks, Ginebra San Miguel and Gerry’s Grill.
The 5-foot-6 pride of Kabalasan, Zamboanga Sibugay reiterated that he and trainer Fernando Cabanela will aim to use his 4-inch height and 2-inch reach advantage over his diminutive Thai foe.
Lopez revealed later that he had a slight difficulty in making weight and was still 2 pounds over regulation last Thursday, which he finally got rid off by skipping dinner the night before and breakfast on Friday.
“Pero okay lang, madali na kong makakabawi,” added the Filipino champ, who was given a heaping bowl of hot beef soup by Cabanela right after the weigh-in.
On the other hand, Canadian assistant trainer David Trehanne said Singwancha had an easy time making the weight “and you could see by his smile during the weigh-in that everything was just fine.”
Trehanne once again declined to reveal their game plan, but exuded confidence when he said “it will just be another day at the office for Singwancha when he meets your boy.”
Tapped as the third man in the ring for the Lopez-Singwancha match is veteran WBC American referee Gene del Bianco, 54, who has been officiating for the world boxing body for the past 5 years.
Named judges were Rey Danseco, Ricardo Canlas and Emmanuel Mananquil.
