Barnett calls Gesta 'Pacquiao-wannabe'
MANILA, Philippines – American boxer Ty Barnett is unimpressed with his August 3 opponent, Filipino lightweight Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta, calling him another "Manny Pacquiao wannabe."
Speaking with Dennis Guillermo of Examiner, Barnett, who has a record of 20 wins, two losses and one draw, said he plans to "expose" Gesta.
"I'm gonna show these guys he's no Manny Pacquiao. There's only one Manny Pacquiao. I'm going to expose him," Barnett said.
"He's not impressive to me. He doesn't impress me at all," he added.
Although Gesta is undefeated, with 25 wins and one draw, Barnett said he has observed that the Filipino has "a lot of flaws in his fight game."
"He does a thousand things wrong and with my experience, I will capitalize on every single one of the," Barnett said, adding that he will neutralize Gesta's supposed speed advantage with his height.
Gesta stands at 5-foot-5, while Barnett is 5-foot-10.
"He's going to have to get close to me to hit me, and I'm going to have a reach advantage," Barnett said.
Barnett has won two straight fights, outpointing journeyman Damon Antoine through eight rounds in March 2012 and then knocking out Robert DaLuz in the seventh round last May.
Gesta, meanwhile, knocked out Oscar Cuero in his most recent fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The Gesta-Barnett fight will be held at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas and will be featured on ESPN 2's Friday Night Fights.
